Flowers:- Actinomorphic. Male flowers with 4-9 calyx-lobes; petals usually absent; stamens 4-25. Female and hermaphrodite flowers with 3-8 calyx-lobes; petals usually absent; ovary unilocular, inferior; placentation parietal; ovules numerous, anatropous. 
Fruit:- A membranous or coriaceous capsule, dehiscing between the styles.
